How to choose a lower-cost Claude Code alternative

The cheapest API is not the one with the lowest advertised token price. It is the one that completes your work without surprise limits, broken tools or expensive retries.
Start with your workload
Separate short autocomplete-like tasks from long agent sessions. Compare the cost of a complete task, not just the cost of one request. Context size, tool loops and retries matter.
Ask five uncomfortable questions
- Is the API compatible with the clients you already use?
- Are streaming and tool calls supported?
- What happens when you reach a rate or context limit?
- Can you see usage and rotate keys safely?
- Is the pricing predictable for your team?
Use a fallback-friendly setup
Keep your client configuration portable. An Anthropic-compatible endpoint lets you test another provider without changing every integration. For important repositories, keep a second route available.
A simple decision rule
Choose the service that makes the total workflow cheaper: fewer retries, less downtime and less time spent debugging provider-specific behavior. A modestly priced, compatible gateway can beat a “cheap” endpoint that breaks halfway through a tool loop.
