Cursor Free Limits: Check Your Allowance, Reset and API-Key Options

Cursor Free Limits: Check Your Allowance, Reset and API-Key Options

Cursor does not publish one universal request count that describes every free account and every feature. First identify your plan, the feature that stopped, and the limit shown in your account. This guide separates current Free accounts from legacy Hobby plans and gives you a checklist for deciding whether to wait, troubleshoot, or change billing.

Free and Hobby are different plan generations

The current Cursor pricing page lists Free with limited Agent and Chat requests. It does not promise an unlimited coding assistant or a fixed number of requests usable across every model. Check the plan attached to your signed-in account before applying numbers from an older tutorial.

Hobby belongs to the legacy Cursor plans. Its documented allowance includes limited Agent, Chat and Tab usage. Legacy usage pools reset with the monthly billing cycle; Hobby does not have the paid plans' on-demand usage option. A free-plan message and a paid-plan spending cap therefore need different remedies.

Find the limit that applies to your account

Use this checklist while the warning is visible. Record the values before changing models or signing out so you can compare the result of one change at a time.

When does free usage reset?

There is no safe reset schedule to apply to every generation of Cursor plans. The usage guide distinguishes current subscription usage from legacy monthly pools. Use the date shown in your own usage view. An old statement that everything resets monthly can be wrong for a different plan.

If the screen provides no reset time, do not invent one from the day you installed the editor. Keep a screenshot of the warning and ask support which allowance it refers to. Reinstalling the application is not a useful first diagnostic step for an account-level limit.

What an API key changes, and what it does not

According to Cursor's API-key documentation, provider keys work with supported chat models; Tab still uses Cursor's built-in models. An OpenAI-compatible URL alone is not proof that every Cursor feature can use a gateway. Check the supported provider, model and feature before paying for a key.

For a supported provider, configure the key under Cursor Settings → Models, save it, and test one small chat request. Provider charges are separate, and team billing can add Cursor-specific usage charges. A successful chat test does not demonstrate that Tab, agents and other features have identical billing or access.

For diagnosis, test a minimal prompt without a large repository context. If the provider rejects that request, inspect its account balance, model access and returned error. If chat works but Tab remains paused, investigate the Tab allowance rather than repeatedly replacing a working provider key.

Frequently asked questions

Is Cursor Free unlimited?

No. Its pricing page describes limited Agent and Chat usage. Check your own account for the applicable allowance.

Will an API key restore Tab completions?

No. Cursor documents custom keys for chat models; Tab uses its built-in models.

Should I keep retrying an exhausted allowance?

First read the warning and usage view. Repeating the same request is not a substitute for checking the reset or resolving billing.
